In this, our eighth edition of the Monocle Quarterly Journal – our IT issue – we trace the history behind the technological advancements made over the past two centuries, with careful consideration of how this aspect of our development has intersected with economic, social and political changes over this period. In our experience as consultants to the banking and insurance industries, we have seen first-hand the challenges that large corporations face when implementing new technologies and aligning them with their existing business structures.
An understanding of the context in which these technologies were created could thus possibly be of some value to the business leaders charged with making decisions regarding the use of new technologies in their organisations. Rather than attempting to capture in its entirety the history of technological innovation, we have instead employed a disjointed structure in this issue. In doing so, we aim to emulate the multifaceted and somewhat bewildering nature of the world around us, which appears to have lost all reference points when it comes to political ethics and personal integrity. Happy reading!
