The World’s Greatest Mathematical Problem Remains Unsolved for Over 160 Years

3/28/2020 - Monocle Journal

Since the time of the Greek mathematician Euclid, three hundred years before the birth of Christ, prime numbers have fascinated the greatest mathematical minds. In his day, Euclid proved the infinity of primes but today, we still do not possess an analytical solution for determining the distribution of primes – a characteristic of prime numbers that has made them integral to complex encryption techniques, including the encryption methods that underpin Bitcoin. To date, no mathematician has come close to such an analytical solution, should it even exist, but the person who went the deepest into prime number theory was Bernard Riemann, 160 years ago.
